Foods that Don’t Feed Your Brain

We’ve all heard that fish is “brain food” but did you know that there are foods that are actually bad for your brain? In fact, when you consume them, they can have a negative impact on things like your emotional health, your cognitive functioning, and even your memory. It may indeed be true that you are what you eat!

  • Cheese. It might be one of the tastiest foods on the planet, however, due to the fact that it high in saturated fat, it’s not good for your brain. Research has shown that high-fat foods are closely associated with poor memory. In addition to this, high fat foods cause injury to the hypothalamus and result in the body’s decreased ability to control body weight.
  • Doughnuts. They disguise themselves as sweet little circles of goodness, but in reality, eating too much fried food actually increases your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. It also increases the risk of raising the levels of “bad” cholesterol in your blood.
  • Fruit Juice. You wouldn’t think that opting for a glass of orange juice over soda would be a bad thing, and as it turns out, it’s about the same. A glass of fruit juice delivers a high amount of sugar to the body which affects the brain by reducing cognitive flexibility, and both short and long term memory.
  • White Rice. Foods with a high glycemic index have the ability to affect emotional health. Products such as white bread, potatoes, corn flakes, and white rice can bring about a dip in mental health and cause depression, especially in post-menopausal women.
  • Microwave Popcorn. Foods that contain trans fat such as microwave popcorn, frozen pizza, coffee creamer, stick margarine, frosting, etc., have high amounts of trans fat that remain solid at room temperature. Eating too much trans fat can result in decreased cognitive functioning, as well as memory loss.
